Liverpool have launched their new kit for the 2020/21 season, which marks their first with sportswear giants Nike. The Premier League champions struck a five-year deal with Nike that is reported by the Liverpool Echo to be worth around £30 million-per-year.The unveiling of the new home kit won’t really come as much of a surprise to Liverpool supporters who have seen photos of it being modelled on social media over the past few days. This week it appeared on Nike’s website in an apparent mishap before being taken down. However, the kit first featured on footyheadlines.com as far back as February.
The red shirt features a white and teal design present on the collar and sleeve cuffs which we get the sense will please some supporters but disappoint others.
In our eyes, it’s a kit suitable for champions.
There are two versions of the home shirt available to purchase from Liverpool’s website.
The first is the vapor version, which costs £99.95.
The stadium version will set you back £69.95.
There are additional fees to add the Premier League winners’ patch, which we’re sure will be a popular choice for Liverpool fans.
The Liverpool Echo spoke to Scott Munson, Nike’s Vice President of Global Football Apparel, who explained the decision to add teal to the home kit.
“The red, white and teal has been a traditional colour combination for Liverpool over the years, particularly as it relates to the traditional club crest,” Munson said.
“The teal holds a further symbolic connection to the city of Liverpool through the Liver Birds that look over the city and have been a prominent fixture on the Liverpool jersey since the club formed in 1892.
“We wanted to bring the teal through in a really interesting and subtle way to nod to the references, but were also mindful that we didn’t want to play around too much with additional colours in order to keep the focus on the red.”
Some additional details were made known when the kit appeared on Nike’s website this week.
“The Liverpool FC Vapor Match Home Shirt gives you the same look worn by your favourite pros on the pitch,” the website read, per This Is Anfield.
“It’s stretchy, streamlined design moves with you, while breathable fabric wicks sweat and dries exceptionally fast for peak performance.”
