Lewis Hamilton has set the fastest ever time around Silverstone to claim pole position for the British Grand Prix tomorrow. He beat Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, who finished 0.313 seconds behind the Englishman, who was simply unstoppable today. Hamilton was a whole 1.022 seconds clear of Max Verstappen, who ended qualifying in third. Mercedes just seem too good for the rest of the field at the minute, with Hamilton and Bottas wiping the floor with all the other drivers. When speaking after qualifying today, Hamilton said, as per the BBC: "There is a relatively big gap between us and third place, but it doesn't matter. Valtteri is pushing me right to the limit. He has been pushing me all weekend."I made some changes before qualifying and it was worse. It was a real struggle out there. This track is difficult with the wind and it is like juggling balls while spinning plates at high speed."I had that spin but with some deep breaths I managed to compose myself. It never gets old."
Hamilton’s teammate Bottas also spoke with BBC Sport, saying: "I was just waiting for Q3 but then I started to drift bit more with the rear end. I don't know what happened, Lewis found more than me."
Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari could only manage 10th position, which for he has said is ‘really disappointing’ after struggling all week.
With Hamilton claiming pole position, it takes him to five in six years and also puts him in good stead to try and extend his home victories to seven.
It wasn’t all a walk in the park for Hamilton, however, who was beaten by Bottas in the first two sessions of qualifying.
McLaren's Lando Norris finished in fifth place, and the rest of the standings can be seen above.
Another win for Hamilton tomorrow would take him further away from Bottas in the standings, however, a win for the Finn could see it get a bit uneasy up at the top for the reigning world champion.
All eyes will be on Silverstone tomorrow as we gear up for an exciting British Grand Prix.
