Aubameyang, Torres, Beckham: 18 players you probably forgot played for AC Milan

  • Rob Swan

AC Milan are one of Europe’s most historic football clubs.

The Italian giants have won the Serie A title 18 times, the Coppa Italia five times and the Champions League seven times.

But in recent years, the Rossoneri have lost their status as one of the continent’s most formidable and feared sides.

They haven’t won the Italian top-flight since 2011, while their last European Cup triumph was 13 years ago.

The number of star names to have played for Milan in recent decades roll off the tongue. Andriy Shevchenko, Kaka, Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo, Filippo Inzaghi… the list goes on and on.

Bu Squawka have published a list of high-profile players that you’ve probably forgotten spent time with Milan.

We thought we’d chuck in a few other names ourselves, so let’s crack on…

Adel Taarabt

Ah, Adel Taarabt. In terms of natural footballing talent, this guy was a genius.

But for whatever reason, the Moroccan playmaker has not quite managed to fulfil his massive potential.

He spent time on loan at the San Siro during the 2013-14 campaign and scored four goals in 16 appearances.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

For Milan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the one that got away.

The Gabon international, who went on to score goals for fun at Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, began his career in the Rossoneri’s youth ranks but failed to make a single first-team appearance.

Gerard Deulofeu

Deulofeu’s story is similar to that of Taarabt. The Spaniard has always possessed massive potential but hasn’t quite managed to scale the heights that many expected he would.

The former Barcelona starlet, who now plies his trade with Watford, scored four goals in 18 appearances with Milan while on loan during the 2016-17 season.

Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres moved on loan to Milan during the 2014-15 campaign in a bid to get his career back on track, but things didn’t pan out as well as the Spaniard would have hoped.

In 10 appearances, Torres managed to score just one goal.

Michael Essien

Michael Essien was past his best by the time he arrived at AC Milan in January 2014.

Over one-and-a-half seasons, the former Chelsea star played 22 times for the Italian outfit.

Fabricio Coloccini

Fabricio Coloccini is best known for his eight-year spell with Newcastle, but the Argentine defender’s first European club were Milan.

He joined the Rossoneri from Boca Juniors in 1999 but only made a handful of appearances before eventually signing for Deportivo in January 2005.

Jens Lehmann

Following a 10-year spell with Schalke, Jens Lehmann signed for Milan in 1998 but failed to impress.

The German goalkeeper only made six appearances before moving on to Borussia Dortmund.

Leonardo Bonucci

Leonardo Bonucci’s spell with Milan, following his surprise move from Juventus in 2017, was short and sweet.

The Italian defender played 51 times during the 2017-18 season, scoring two goals, before moving back to Turin.

Pepe Reina

Pepe Reina is currently on loan at Aston Villa. Before that, the former Liverpool goalkeeper played 13 times for Milan over the course of two seasons.

Arsenal’s current defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos joined Milan from Genoa in 2010 but only played seven times before moving on to Werder Bremen.

Lucas Ocampos

Lucas Ocampos, who has just enjoyed a fine season with Sevilla, was on Milan’s books during the 2016-17 campaign while on loan from Marseille.

He struggled at the San Siro, failing to hit the back of the net despite playing 12 games.

Bojan Krkic

Labelled the ‘next Lionel Messi’ early on in his career, Bojan Krkic has struggled to live up to the hype.

That said, the former Barcelona forward hasn’t enjoyed a terrible career. He was on loan at Milan during the 2012-13 season, from AS Roma, and scored three goals in 27 appearances.

David Beckham

If you were to list David Beckham’s clubs, AC Milan are probably the one you’re most likely to forget. Well, aside from Preston North End.

Becks had two loan spells at the San Siro during his time with LA Galaxy and netted four goals in 53 games.

Asmir Begovic

Any idea where Asmir Begovic has been during the 2019-20 season?

That’s right: on Milan’s bench. The Bosnia and Herzegovina ‘keeper has played twice for the Rossoneri this term.

Philippe Senderos

With the exception of Arsenal, Philippe Senderos has never stayed in one place for too long.

The Swiss defender played 19 games while on loan from Arsenal back in the 2008-09 season.

Alberto Aquilani

After Alberto Aquilani’s move to Liverpool failed to work out, the Italian midfielder spent time on loan at Juventus and then Milan.

Okay, so most of you will remember that Ronaldo played for AC Milan, but there will be some of you who forgot. Be honest now!

The Brazilian legend was past his best by the time he signed for Milan in January 2007 but still scored nine goals in 20 games.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

After leaving Ajax in 2009, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar spent one season with Real Madrid and another with Milan, where he netted a disappointing seven goals in 30 appearances.
