Manchester United will consider this season a success.

Thanks to an incredible run of form post-lockdown, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side finished third in the Premier League.

They still have a chance for silverware too when the Europe League returns this week.

But, as good as a third-placed finish is, it's clear that United - and the rest of the league - are far behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

The 15 point gap between second and third proves that. So next season, it's up to the chasing pack to close in on England's two top teams.

In order to do that, you would expect Man United to strengthen their squad.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish, but many believe they need a new goalkeeper too.

De Gea could be replaced this season

It's incredible to think, given just how important David de Gea has been since moving to Old Trafford in 2011.

Not long ago, he was renowned as the best 'keeper in Europe but now, he seems replaceable and the club will apparently turn to a familiar name this summer.

According to The Sun, United are lining up a shock move for Kasper Schmeichel to replace De Gea as their number one next season.

Schmeichel has been linked with a move to Man Utd

The Leicester City goalkeeper, of course, is the son of Peter Schmeichel, a legend at Old Trafford.

While many expect Dean Henderson to take the role soon, it's reported that Solskjaer has doubts over whether he's ready to replace De Gea, despite a brilliant campaign on loan at Sheffield United.

The manager has also lost faith in his Spanish star and was a trustworthy, experienced goalkeeper as he prepares to challenge for the Premier League and Champions League.

Schmeichel could offer United good experience

Schmeichel, 33, still has three years left on his deal at Leicester, but should Man United come calling, it's hard to see him turning down a move.

We'd imagine his father would certainly be a fan of the idea, too.
