British Grand Prix results: Lewis Hamilton wins record seventh at Silverstone in dramatic fashion

Hamilton won a dramatic GP

Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone for a record seventh time on Sunday afternoon, surviving a scare on the final lap.

The Mercedes driver put in another dominant display on home turf but lost his 35-second lead over second-placed Max Verstappen due to a puncture to his front tire.

With the Red Bull driver cutting into his lead, it all came down to the final corner as Hamilton, on three tires, limped over the line in first.

Verstappen finished less than six seconds behind him in what was quite a remarkable final lap.

Charles Leclerc took the final place on the podium after disaster struck Valtteri Bottas, who was second with 49 laps completed.

But his tire blew out before Hamilton's and forced him into the pits, as he dropped from second to an 11th place finish.

Both Mercedes drivers suffered tire problems in what was a remarkable close to the British GP. Just look at Hamilton's tire after the race:

Crazy! But, his car did get him over the line and this race will have a big effect on the Drivers' Championship.

Hamilton now has 88 points for the season, extending his lead at the top of the standings over Bottas to 30 points with the win, as his teammate and rival left Silverstone empty-handed.

Verstappen is now just six points behind Bottas in third, with 52 points. Hamilton summed up the memorable race, saying:

"Down the straight, the tyre deflated and that was a heart in the mouth moment... I was just praying to get it round.

"I was really chilled at the end. Bono was giving me the info [about Max]. I've definitely never experienced something like that on the last lap."
