Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is part of a group that has purchased the XFL for $15 million.
Just hours before the American football league was set to go up for auction, Johnson teamed up with Redbird Capital to buy it.
According to Sportico, they have paid $15 million, splitting it evenly. Johnson’s business partner, Dany Garcia, who is also his ex-wife, will be a stakeholder as well.
Vince McMahon, of course, is the previous owner of the XFL but filed for bankruptcy in April after the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of its inaugural season.
Now, he hands the business over to The Rock, who is arguably the biggest star WWE have ever created.
With Johnson on board, the bankrupt league may now have enough star power to draw even non-sports fans in and there are rumours that suggest the league could get going again in 2021.
Buying the XFL is the latest move made by Gerry Cardinale's Redbird, which also recently bought French Ligue 2 football team, Toulouse.
The Rock released a statement confirming his decision to buy the XFL, which reads, per TMZ:
"The acquisition of the XFL with my talented partners, Dany Garcia and Gerry Cardinale, is an investment for me that’s rooted deeply in two things - my passion for the game and my desire to always take care of the fans.
"With pride and gratitude for all that I’ve built with my own two hands, I plan to apply these callouses to the XFL, and look forward to creating something special for the players, fans, and everyone involved for the love of football."
Rock, of course, played college football at the University of Miami before becoming a global superstar with WWE and it seems now, he's taking his love of the game to a whole new level.
