Leeds United have waited 16 years to return to the Premier League, and they're certainly taking it seriously.

After such a long time away from the big time you could forgive the Whites for being cautious in their spending as they look to avoid the sort of hefty financial gamble that has seen plenty of sides suffer in the long run.

But for Marcelo Bielsa's side this is their time and they know it.

If Leeds are to reestablish themselves among the country's biggest clubs then they need to show enough ambition to propel themselves into the upper echelons of the table.

With all due respect to the players already in their squad, that might mean bringing in some new faces.

The gap in quality between the top two leagues is massive, and that means that signing a player with experience of Premier League football could do wonders for them.

While this player doesn't have a wealth of top flight experience, he's certainly destined to become a household name.

Reports from The Telegraph have linked Leeds United with a move for Matty Longstaff.

The Newcastle United youngster is hot property this summer with a number of Europe's biggest clubs said to be chasing him, including Udinese, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan.

Longstaff is now out of contract at St James' Park, and with no agreement forthcoming it seems that his future may lie away from his native north east.

At 20 years old, the midfielder would be available for a nominal fee, with Leeds needing to pay a small sum of compensation to the Magpies due to him being under the age of 24.

But considering the amount of potential that Longstaff has in his locker, it's unlikely to take the starlet long to pay that sum back.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

What a massive coup this would be for Leeds United.

We all know that Marcelo Bielsa loves developing young talent and so the opportunity to take on one of England's most exciting prospects would be huge.

Matty Longstaff has a bright future ahead of him after bursting onto the scene at St James' Park last term.

After scoring a goal on his debut against Manchester United, the 20-year-old established himself as a first team regular and became hugely popular among the Newcastle fans.

If Leeds were to complete a deal, I'm sure that he'd be just as popular at Elland Road.

An all-round midfielder, Longstaff has all the potential in the world to be an established Premier League player, and under Bielsa he would have the chance to develop into something even more accomplished.
