Manager John Sheridan lauded his players' battling approach after Chesterfield were left needing just one point to secure promotion from League Two following their 2-1 win over Macclesfield.

The Spireites sit four points ahead of fourth-placed Shrewsbury and only need to draw one of their remaining four fixtures to move into League One.

Sheridan said: "I knew it would be a hard game, they are an awkward side who are good at what they do and they've got a good away record so I knew it would be difficult. "

Such a comfortable league position was far from secure at half-time as the Silkmen went into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to Lewis Chalmers' penalty.

However, Sheridan's men showed the sort of spirit that has typified their campaign to emerge victorious, with Craig Davies and Danny Whitaker getting on the scoresheet.

"I thought we started the game slowly and didn't really get going but again they've shown character," Sheridan added. "I just wanted to get them going and luckily I got a reaction from them. The team performance in the second half was very, very good.

"I had to say a few things which really I shouldn't be saying to a team that is top of the table but they responded.

"We have got some tough games, luckily we are in a good position; we have got a hard run in on paper but we will look after ourselves because we know we need a point to get promotion. Thereafter, we want to try and win as many games as possible."

Macclesfield manager Gary Simpson felt the loss of Nat Brown, who went off in the 34th minute after bravely hurling himself at the feet of Jack Lester, was pivotal.

He said: "We came with a game plan and it worked up to a point. Losing Brownie (Nat Brown) didn't help us but we got the goal and could have added to that to be honest."
