Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have now concluded their 2019/20 league campaigns.
Ronaldo was able to get his hands on a second consecutive Serie A trophy despite Juventus' final-day defeat to AS Roma, avenging their Coppa Italia final defeat to Napoli in the process.
It means that the Portuguese has now won a pair of league titles in Italy, Spain and England across his decorated career and Ciro Immobile only narrowly pipped him to the European Golden Shoe.

There wasn't the same flurry of silverware for Messi, however, with the Barcelona superstar watching on as his team came up short to Real Madrid in the La Liga title race.
Combined with a premature elimination from the Copa del Rey and it makes for a disappointing team season in Catalonia, even though Messi has been in top form individually.
The six-time Ballon d'Or winner joined Arsenal great Thierry Henry in the history books as only the second player to ever surpass 20 goals and 20 assists in a top five European league season.
Who had the better league season?
And although Messi and Ronaldo still have the final stages of the Champions League to come, we've already got a pretty good idea about how their 2019/20 campaigns will be remembered.
Besides, comparing the two superstars ourselves makes more sense than ever with France Football confirming that the Ballon d'Or won't be awarded in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We're pretty sure Robert Lewandowski had a better year than both of them, don't get us wrong, but we've decided to compare Messi and Ronaldo regardless by looking at their 2019/20 statistics.

It's absolutely no contest in this department with Ronaldo really running Immobile close in both the Serie A and European scoring ranks, while Messi only finished fifth in the Golden Shoe standings.

No surprises here. Messi has always been more prolific when it comes to assists and 2019/20 marked his highest ever playmaking tally, which is more than quadruple what Ronaldo managed.

As we mentioned earlier, Ronaldo and Messi have both had their fair share of trophy heartbreak this season, but it's the Juventus man who narrowly wins this category by way of his Serie A success.

Again, the more rounded the statistics, the more that Messi shines and it goes to show that the Barca icon might just have had the most complete and varied statistical season of his career.

So... Messi has had the better season then? Not for me.
I think we should applaud Messi for breaking boundaries with his goals and assists juggling this season, but Ronaldo scoring 31 league goals in this Juventus team at 35 years old is simply staggering.
The Old Lady have really stuttered and spluttered at times this season, but Ronaldo has still wound back the hands of time to produce a goal-scoring tally to overshadow his younger rival.
Plus, as much as this is an individual comparison, trophies have got to count for something and you can't fully divorce Messi from what was an unmitigated breakdown from Barcelona in La Liga.
So, yes, they've both had incredible 2019/20 campaigns that could yet become even better, but it's Ronaldo who would have come closest to challenging Lewandowski in my eyes.
