Leeds United are back in the big time.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side won the Championship at something of a canter and are now preparing for life back in the Premier League.

It’s the first time in 16 years that they will be playing against the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Throughout their season in the Championship, they lost just nine games, ultimately winning the title by 10 points from second-placed West Bromwich Albion.

This summer, though, is key if Leeds are to take on the big boys in the top-flight.

And it seems that plans are underway to strengthen Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

Sport Witness carries a report from El Intransigente in Argentina around a possible acquisition for the Elland Road club.

River Plate defender Lucas Martinez Quarta is a player who is in demand, with Serie A giants AC Milan and AS Roma both interested in securing his signature.

He has a release clause of €20 million (£18m), though River are not expecting to have that clause triggered in this transfer window.

Leeds and Spanish side Real Betis have both reportedly informed the Argentine club that they will not meet the clause.

Quarta has won two caps for Argentina and has made 96 appearances for River since making his debut in 2016.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Quarta is an intriguing option.

A fully-fledged international who is only 24, he could dramatically improve under Bielsa’s management.

Of course, it may take some time for him to adjust to life in the rough-and-tumble of the English top-flight, but Leeds have the finances to be able to splash the cash here.

They are flush with the money earned from promotion and taking a gamble here or there could potentially have a huge return.

Quarta would absolutely be a gamble, but the returns could be massive.

Leeds ought to make this deal happen.
