West Ham United endured a difficult season.

They flirted with the prospect of relegation throughout the campaign, but ultimately avoided the drop.

As the season came to a conclusion, they did not lose any of their final four games, beating Norwich City and Watford, and drawing with Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Those results were enough for the Hammers to finish 16th in the Premier League, five points clear of 18th-placed AFC Bournemouth.

Now, with the summer transfer window open, they need to ensure that they strengthen their squad if they are to stave off the prospect of relegation again next season.

It certainly appears that plans are underway to that end, especially when it comes to recruiting strikers.

Moyes mainly called upon Sebastien Haller for the 2019/20 season, but he scored just seven Premier League goals, in 32 games.

He did not manage to net in any of the club’s final four games, with the club instead relying on Michail Antonio, as he finished the season with 10 goals, including a four-goal haul against Norwich.

And negotiations are underway for the Hammers to secure a La Liga star.

Sport Witness carries a report from Mundo Deportivo, who claim that Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite is a target in the summer window.

The 29-year-old is also wanted by Everton, but he scored just once for the Catalan giants.

Quique Setien’s side are said to have “advanced the negotiations” with the Irons for the Denmark international.

Barca are said to be keen to offload Braithwaite this summer, having paid €18 million (£16.2m) for his signature, and the Hammers are willing to pay €20m (£18m).

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Braithwaite is not the striker for West Ham to sign.

He just hasn’t been very good for quite a while now.

Indeed, throughout his career, he has only ever scored more than 20 goals for one club – FC Toulouse, where he scored 40 in 149 games.

Throughout his spells at Esbjerg, Leganes, Middlesbrough, Bordeaux, and Barca, he has scored 46 goals in 210 games.

That’s an average of 0.2 goals per game.

He has also never played Premier League football, only featuring for Boro in the Championship, and even then he did not manage to hit double figures, scoring eight goals in 36 outings.

That he has only netted once in a Barca team featuring Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, and Ousmane Dembele only suggests that he isn’t the right acquisition for West Ham.

They should look elsewhere.
