Tottenham close to announcing their first summer signing

Jose Mourinho celebrates

Tottenham were left to celebrate a seventh-placed finish two weekends ago.

Jose Mourinho has struggled in his time with the club, conceding 48 goals, but the Lilywhites still secured a place in Europe.

It was a rather bizarre thing to go wild about, but how the mighty have fallen. Mourinho is one of the most decorated coaches in world football, after all.

Only a year ago, Spurs were celebrating reaching the Champions League final too. It's been a rather different season for the boys in White this time around.

A highly-anticipated documentary from Amazon Prime will detail the ins and outs of their journey in 2019/20, one where they suffered both on and off the pitch.

Mauricio Pochettino was sacked and since then, Tottenham haven't really recovered.

They will find it difficult to do so this summer too, with cash reserves slim.

Jose Mourinho ponders

Tottenham recently had to borrow £175m from the bank so they are rather strapped financially.

However, their first summer arrival could occur very soon.

That's if you believe The Telegraph who report that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is set to sign for the club in a deal worth £15m.

As part of the transfer, Kyle Walker-Peters will head the opposite way for a fee of £12m.

Spurs have been tracking the Southampton midfielder for a while now and Daniel Levy appears to have finally got his man after positive talks this week.

With that move all but done, the north Londoners will be eager to crack on with further business.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Hojbjerg is an interesting player, one who hasn't had a normal rise through football. From being a prodigy at Bayern Munich under Pep Guardiola to becoming Southampton's skipper, he's now set for an eye-catching switch.

However, with the Dane set to put pen to paper, it surely spells bad news for Tanguy Ndombele.

The Frenchman has found life difficult as it is this season to break into the starting XI and the addition of a further central midfielder is unlikely to help.

It's already been reported that the former Lyon man is unwilling to play for Mourinho again, such has been his limited opportunities after arriving.

Ndombele started just 12 top-flight matches this season, a tally that simply isn't enough given the club record-fee he arrived for.

Hojbjerg could give Spurs a good opportunity to start phasing out the French enforcer or on the other hand, it could give Ndombele the kick he needs to push on and start reminding the coaches what he's capable of.

That, however, looks rather unlikely.
