Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo eat pressure for breakfast.

The Barcelona and Juventus superstars are the greatest players of the 21st century, winning 11 Ballon d'Or trophies between them and scoring almost 1,500 goals combined.

Messi has been crowned a European champion four times at Camp Nou, brought unrivalled domestic success with 10 La Liga crowns and six Copa del Rey trophies to boot.

The Ronaldo or Messi debate

Ronaldo has won the Champions League five times in his career, scoring in three of the finals, while also collecting six domestic cups and inspired Portugal to European Championships glory in 2016.

It's no wonder that they're both adored by millions of fans around the world, but it's similarly unsurprisingly that the debate about which player is better shows no sign of ending.

You couldn't write how perfect the rivalry is, particularly when the pair stood either side of the El Clasico battle-lines, locking horns at least twice in the world's biggest game each season.

A matter of preference

However, even though Ronaldo has kissed goodbye to Real Madrid, their differing playing styles still makes which sporting icon you prefer a matter of taste.

Messi tends to be the pick of the footballing purists, revelling in the beautiful nature of Barca's tiki-taka football and their star man's uncanny ability to dribble past four, five or six players at once.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, is often referred to as the ultimate footballing machine and a product of hard work that allows him to be world-class in just about every aspect of his game.

Is Messi the better goalscorer?

And it's that contrast that leads to a common statement, even amongst those who think that Messi is the greatest player of all time: Ronaldo is the greatest goalscorer of all time.

It seems like a fair compromise, doesn't it? Well... maybe not, because a recent Twitter thread from user @LFCrezz suggests that Messi might actually be deserving of that title as well.

Opining that 'Ronaldo is not a better goalscorer than Messi', the thread has used some interesting statistics to suggest that we've been looking at the debate all wrong, so check it out down below:

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

As someone who loves both Ronaldo and Messi, I kind of like the omnibenevolent solution that is: Messi is the best player and Ronaldo is the best goalscorer.

Buuuuuuut... it's simply not true.

The fact Messi has a better goal-per-game ratio - even in the Champions League, which is supposed to be Ronaldo's domain - makes it nearly impossible to float the argument with a straight face.

In other words, how can Ronaldo be a better goalscorer than Messi if his goal-scoring rate is lower? Besides, the Twitter thread shows that's basically the case in every circumstance you can imagine.

Does that seem harsh on Ronaldo? You bet and it almost feels uncomfortable to heap more and more praise on Messi but I'm sorry Cristiano, there's only so much you can argue with the stats.
