The transfer window is beginning to hot up at West Ham.

Just like last summer, it looks as though the Irons are going to be particularly active in the transfer market.

And who can blame them? David Moyes' side performed way below expectations in 2019/20, fighting off relegation to finish 16th in the Premier League table.

Jeremy Ngakia and Pablo Zabaleta have both exited but it wouldn't be a surprise if more departures occurred, especially after witnessing some of the displays this term.

There is plenty of deadwood lingering around the London Stadium with players like Jack Wilshere still on the club's books.

For players like that, the best option for their career will surely be to move elsewhere. Though replacing members of the squad who do leave will be vitally important.

That should especially be the case at right-back where they need numbers quickly.

West Ham have been tipped to sign Kyle Walker-Peters in recent days but another full-back is now on their radar.

According to Goal, the player in question is Argentina international Gonzalo Montiel.

The River Plate defender is being targeted by five other clubs; Torino, Betis, Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke.

It looks as though the Hammers could be at the front of the queue, however, officially submitting a bid to sign the 23-year-old.

The bid, it's reported is €7.5m (£6.7m), a sum of money that is below his release clause.

Talks are now ongoing so it remains to be seen whether their offer is accepted.

Gonzalo Montiel defends

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Montiel isn't a household name but if he does arrive, he should have no trouble slotting into West Ham's side.

Moyes is already a fan of the player and he gets on well with fellow countryman Manuel Lanzini.

Speaking about the right-sided player earlier in May this year, he stated: "I think Montiel would fit in well at West Ham. I know they looked for him and couldn’t bring him in, he asked me and I spoke to him.

"The coach (Moyes) likes him."

It bodes well that he already has a good relationship with someone at the London Stadium and at just £6.7m, they'd find themselves a bargain.

With Walker-Peters being quoted at £12m, this deal makes far more sense. He is capped by Argentina and has played in the Copa Libertadores on a regular basis.

Furthermore, he is more adept in defensive scenarios.

Montiel made two tackles per game for River Plate last season and also won 1.5 headers per match. Walker-Peters, on the other hand, was only successful from 0.7 aerial duels and 1.3 tackles at Southampton.
