It is perhaps not the news that every Assassin’s Creed fan has been waiting for, but the feline-loving community will surely be delighted with the latest update.

In the upcoming ‘Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’ title, the game’s official Twitter account has announced that you will be able to hold and pet all cats.

It had previously been announced that the in-game Vikings could take their cats into battle with them, to much fanfare, so this latest announcement is an added bonus.

Cats have always had a place in Norse mythology. The Norse goddess Freyja had two cats to draw her chariot, given to her by Thor. The wolf god Fenrir was destined to destroy Odin during the battle of Ragnarok, but was restrained by a magical chain called Gleipnir. It contained six magical ingredients, including the sound of a cat walking.

Despite the introduction of felines being the main feature, you will also encounter dogs and foxes throughout your exploration of the open-world territory that Valhalla features.

In the game, the player takes on the role of Eivor, a Viking raider. The action centres around the Vikings’ attempts to settle in Anglo-Saxon England in 873 AD, as part of their expansion across Europe.

The Vikings come into conflict with several English kingdoms over the coming years, before Eivor meets the Hidden Ones and teams up against the Order of the Ancients.

The game has been in development for over two-and-a-half years, and follows on from its highly successful predecessor Assassin’s Creed Origins, which received a Metacritic score of 85 on Xbox One.

Valhalla is set to release in November on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and, for the first time in the series, on Stadia. Ubisoft also intend for the game to be its launch title for the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles.
