Manchester United are hoping that this is the summer to close the gap on their rivals.

Liverpool and Manchester City have set the pace in recent years, but the hierarchy at Old Trafford are hopeful of changing that.

After securing a top four finish in the Premier League the next objective is to close in on the top two.

But if they're to do that then they'll need to strengthen with some top additions.

Jadon Sancho is one player who has been heavily linked with a move to United.

Speculation has been building for several months over a deal that could end up being worth around £110million.

20 goals and 20 assists this term is very impressive for the starlet, but one Man United legend believes that the club should be focusing on a new striker.

Luke Gardener of the Daily Express has recently revealed that the club could look to wrap up an audacious move for £108million-rated Tottenham star Harry Kane.

While this is a move that could be tricky to pull off, Paul Scholes believes that the England star would make a much bigger impact at Old Trafford.

Speaking to BT Sport about the Sancho pursuit, as quoted by the Daily Star, Scholes said: “I don’t think it’s a major priority.

“Sancho is a top quality footballer, he would improve any team like Liverpool, Manchester City, Real Madrid.

“His stats prove that. He would be a major asset to the team.

“We do already have three wide forwards that are similar, possibly not quite as good but potentially they could be.

“If that’s Harry Kane you’re talking about rather than Sancho, I’d be more keen to sign him.

“They need a No.9, and Harry Kane would be that man for me.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Harry Kane to Manchester United would be an massive signing.

The striker is a talisman in the truest sense of the word for Tottenham Hotspur, and that means that they're unlikely to want him to leave.

But with Champions League football on offer at Old Trafford it could be hard to convince him.

While United looked much better in the closing stages of the season, you could still argue that a natural striker would make a big difference for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

The trio of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have been hugely impressive, but with perhaps the England star would add a crucial focal point to the attack.

Jadon Sancho appears to be the priority at this point, but should that move fall away then a pursuit of the Spurs star would be hugely eye catching.
