Tottenham enter race for Brentford star dubbed 'the Algerian Messi'

The summer transfer window is open and for Tottenham Hotspur that's very good news.

By recent standard, Spurs had a torrid campaign last term as they failed to hit the heights of recent seasons.

Jose Mourinho took over partway through the season, and while it wasn't pretty, he did manage to spare their blushes in the end.

A top six finish will certainly disappoint the Tottenham hierarchy, but considering where they were mid-season a spot in the Europa League.

But let's get this straight, Mourinho will not tolerate a season like that again.

If Spurs are to get themselves back on track then they'll certainly need to strengthen this summer.

However they'll face significant competition for this particular target.

Reports from The Mirror have claimed that Tottenham are keen on a move for Said Benrahma.

Dubbed 'the Algerian Lionel Messi', the Brentford star is hot property this summer after a stunning campaign in the Championship.

Benrahma managed to score 17 goals and create 10 for Thomas Frank's side in a season that nearly saw them win the ultimate prize.

Brentford were within minutes of securing a spot in the Premier League but fell short as they were defeat by Fulham in the Championship play-off final.

However defeat means that the standout performer in the second tier is almost guaranteed to move on this summer.

Chelsea and Arsenal have previously been linked with a move for the winger, while the likes of Leeds United and Crystal Palace are also said to be keen.

Benrahma is expected to cost in the region of £25million - a fee that could be seen as worthwhile as Tottenham look to bolster their attacking ranks.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This could be a very exciting move for Tottenham Hotspur.

Jose Mourinho's side struggled in front of goal at times last season and based on the pace and trickery of the Algerian, Said Benrahma could be an ideal solution.

Despite having no experience in the Premier League, the 24-year-old looks to have all of the ability needed to be a success.

At £25million the winger isn't too expensive, and given the calibre of his performances that sort of fee could prove to be a bargain in years to come.

Of course Spurs will face plenty of competition.

Benrahma is arguably the most in-demand player in England right now and with several other clubs interested they may have to move quickly to get a deal done.
