How do you improve a side that picked up 99 points in the Premier League last season and strolled to the title?

In truth, it’s going to be very difficult for Jurgen Klopp to make his current XI stronger.

Instead, the Reds will be hoping to increase the size - and quality - of their overall squad as they look to go head-to-head with Manchester City once again next season.

What do they need?

Another centre-back after Dejan Lovren’s departure is a must, while a creative midfielder could be on Jurgen Klopp’s wishlist. Meanwhile, with Divock Origi set to leave, quality back-up to the front-three will be high on the agenda.

However, it seems the first arrival through the door at Anfield this summer will be a left-back to provide Andy Robertson with some competition.

That left-back looks set to be Norwich City’s, Jamal Lewis.

According to a report in The Athletic on Thursday afternoon, the Reds have submitted a £10 million bid for the 22-year-old, which includes a substantial sell-on clause.

James Pearce claims Klopp is a big admirer of Lewis and the player is happy to accept that he would initially be back-up to Robertson and “has his heart set” on a move to the champions.

But what will Lewis bring to this Liverpool side when he does get a chance?

Like Robertson, Lewis loves getting forward to produce crosses for his teammates. However, he may need to improve his output as he failed to register a single assist in his 28 Premier League appearances this season.

But in a video titled ‘Jamal Lewis. Welcome to Liverpool’ you can see exactly why Klopp wants him.

He’s quick and athletic, capable of getting up and down the pitch just like Robertson does. He’s also got the ability to produce that cross-field switch that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Robertson love to do.

Lewis certainly has the energy to suit Klopp’s system and he's also incredibly two-footed.

Liverpool have a decent trade record of picking up players from relegated clubs.

They signed Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle in 2016, Robertson from Hull in 2017, Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke in 2018, Harvey Elliott from Fulham in 2019 and now Lewis could be next in the list.

If he has half the impact that Robertson had since his arrival, he will be a very good signing indeed.
