Celtic looking to sign striker on loan

Lukas Nmecha

Celtic summer priority is clear – they need another striker.

Odsonne Edouard may have scored a hat-trick against Hamilton last weekend, but there are still fears that the Frenchman could leave.

He is a highly sought-after player and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him eventually depart Parkhead.

For now, though, he is still a Celtic player, although that shouldn’t stop Nick Hammond and Neil Lennon from thinking about alternative options.

West Ham’s Albian Ajeti is still a signing that could be on the table for the Hoops while a contract has reportedly been offered to former Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher.

The 33-year-old is available on a free transfer and looks like a bargain transfer for the Bhoys in a post-COVID market where finding value for money will be of utmost importance.

However, a new striker has emerged as a potential solution for Celtic.

According to The Daily Mail, the Hoops are pondering a loan move for Manchester City youngster Lukas Nmecha.

The 21-year-old is valued at just £3.2m and after failing to succeed on loan at Wolfsburg and Middlesbrough last term, needs to find somewhere he can finally settle and call home.

Pep Guardiola has previously hailed him as a great prospect, but if he is to ever cut the mustard at the Etihad, he needs to start proving himself now.

The same report states that Vakoun Issouf Bayo is set to leave on loan and thus, he will need replacing.

GIVEMESPORT’S Matt Dawson says…

It’s clear that Celtic need a couple more attacking talents to add to their armoury but it’s hard to suggest that Nmecha would be a good addition.

A big and powerful striker, standing at 6 foot 1, he is capable of bullying a defender, but he rarely finds the back of the net.

In fact, he didn’t score a single goal last season and hasn’t beaten the goalkeeper since April 2019.

That’s a record of 16 months without a senior goal to his name, last scoring in a 4-0 win for Preston North End against Ipswich.

Nmecha shakes hands with Pep Guardiola

It’s been a troubling time for Nmecha who just needs a vote of confidence in order to flourish.

Of course, Celtic have had some good relations with his parent club Man City, landing Patrick Roberts on loan and signing both Oliver Ntcham and Jeremie Frimpong from Guardiola’s team in previous years.

Nmecha has had a year and half to forget, starting just six times across all competitions in 2019/20, so it would surely be nothing short of a risk for Celtic to loan the forward.

They are surely better off looking elsewhere.
