Manchester United did incredibly well to get Alexis Sanchez off their wage bill this week. It’d been abundantly clear for some time that the Red Devils made a huge financial mistake bringing the Chilean forward to Old Trafford back in January 2018.While Sanchez technically arrived on a ‘free’ transfer, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving to Arsenal in exchange, the South American’s wages were astronomical. He earned a basic wage of £350,000 per week, although this figure had the potential to rise to an eye-watering £560,000 per week with image rights, bonuses and other add-ons.United also paid Sanchez a massive £6.7 million signing-on fee, according to the Daily Mail, plus £5 million in agent fees to the player’s representative Fernando Felicevich.Adding up all the numbers, Sanchez cost Man Utd an incredible £66,420,840.p1ef3pktar1tv11tqtf1kim01fkhd.jpgThe Premier League giants splashed out £34,973,710 on Sanchez prior to his loan move to Inter in September 2019, plus an additional £15,747,130 after he went to ply his trade at the San Siro. This doesn’t include his signing-on fee. This means Sanchez cost United £13.2 million per goal, £7.3 million per assists, and £1.5 million for simply pulling on the shirt.p1ef3pfr5gubs1ueq1243uufvdg9.jpgThat Sanchez only scored five goals in 45 mostly disappointing performances means he will be remembered as the worst pound-for-pound signing in Premier League history. This was an outcome that nobody expected when United signed the revered forward from Arsenal.Sanchez was arguably the Premier League’s best player between 2014-2018.But for whatever reason, he was unable to deliver at Old Trafford. The Daily Mail have also revealed that United were so desperate to get rid of Sanchez that they handed him a whopping £9 million to rip up the last two years of his contract.

Remarkably, Man Utd bosses are understood to be ‘very satisfied’ with this outcome.

Why? Because Sanchez was in line to earn around £50 million had he remained at Old Trafford until the end of his contract.

United feel they’ve made a saving of £41 million by convincing the Chile international to mutually terminate his deal.

Sanchez is now earning a more modest £130,000-a-week at Inter after putting pen to paper on a three-year deal.

But it’s safe to assume that he’s set for life thanks to his ill-fated, but incredibly lucrative, spell with Man Utd.
