Aston Villa survived the drop by the very skin of their teeth.

An amazing victory over Arsenal in the final week of the campaign proved decisive as they drew with West Ham on the last day.

With Bournemouth winning, it was the victory only a few days before that saw them survive.

It wasn't the easiest of seasons but the Villans deserve credit for persevering with their methods and for keeping Dean Smith.

The boyhood fan is a progressive manager and after guiding them to a miraculous promotion in 2018/19, also deserves the plaudits.

After spending over £100m last summer, though, it looks as though a similar sort of spree could be on the cards a year on.

However, their recruitment will desperately need to improve and after parting company with Suso, their methods could change completely.

Dean Smith and John Terry

The club's new Sporting Director is Johan Lange but it remains to be seen what his capabilities are.

What's clear is that Villa will need a new striker. Journalist James Rushton revealed that Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard is on their radar when speaking to the Claret & Blue podcast, but he also spoke about another forward.

That happened to be former loanee Tammy Abraham. The pod cited that he was one of the names on the lips of supporters.

Though, discussing potential interest, they claimed that it wouldn't be completely viable to sign the Chelsea striker.

Rushton said:

"I feel like there might not be that spending power to bring him in but if you do want that striker, that main man. He is that guy, he does fit that bill."

"If that happened it would be amazing.

"If he goes to Villa, it would be Villa’s biggest signing of all time by some mile. It would be between about £30m-£60m unless it was a loan to buy or something mad."

Tammy Abraham at Aston Villa

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

This would be a fairytale reunion for Abraham and Villa.

The striker fired the Midlands side to promotion two seasons ago by racking up a mighty 26 goals in the Championship and quickly became a fan favourite at Villa Park.

A few months ago, Smith said: "Tammy has done what I expected him to do. He's a top player and a top person. I think he is the real deal, everything about him."

Fine praise indeed for a young striker who already has a great relationship with the current Villa boss.

Tammy Abraham at Chelsea

Having scored 17 goals for Chelsea this term, he is only improving too - performing consistently at a higher level than ever before.

However, in recent months he's been ousted by Olivier Giroud. With Timo Werner arriving as well, the immediate future doesn't look too profitable for Abraham.

Would a loan move to Villa help? Probably. But will a switch actually happen? It feels unlikely.
