Tottenham Hotspur have plenty of work to do this summer.

A disappointing campaign saw them scrape into the top six of the Premier League while also going another season without competing for a major trophy.

With Jose Mourinho in charge, the hope will now be to kick on in order to start being in the mix for the top honours available.

The Portuguese manager is a proven winner and so his focus will be on building a squad of players who are capable of ending the North London side's trophy-less run.

Several players have been linked, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg said to be closing in a permanent switch from Southampton.

But will that deal all-but done, it seems the club are preparing a move for another player.

Reports from The Sun have linked Spurs with an audacious move for Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

The Arsenal man is reportedly available this summer with Mikel Arteta hoping to raise funds to strengthen his squad.

It's claimed that the Gunners value the 22-year-old at £30million, but could be tempted into selling him for £20million as the need for funds heightens.

Along with Tottenham, a number of clubs including West Ham, Crystal Palace and Fulham are also said to be keen.

The future of Maitland-Niles has been up for debate for several months with speculation that the midfielder was unhappy at the lack of first team football that he was getting at the Emirates Stadium.

But quizzed on his player's future, Arteta insisted that he was ignore the reports before claiming that he had 'incredible quality'.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This a move that would certainly throw the cat amongst the pigeons.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is undoubtedly a talented football player who deserves to be playing more than he is at the moment.

It seems that the 22-year-old is undervalued at the Emirates Stadium and that, quite rightly, has led him to consider his future.

While he's often described as a versatile midfielder, Maitland Niles is definitely best in central midfielder, and so he will naturally be wanting to excel in that position.

I can only imagine the reaction if he left Arsenal for Tottenham.

The Gunners can hardly complain if the player does make the move to Jose Mourinho's side, given their stance that he's available.

But I'm sure that the supporters will be less-than impressed if it does happen.

In terms of the player, I think that moving to Spurs would be a great move and the chance to link up with Mourinho could see Maitland-Niles take his game to the next level.
