Liverpool are trying to improve their squad this summer.

Of course, that is the job of every team in the transfer window, but the Reds seem to face a particularly difficult task in strengthening their crop.

The Reds won the title by 18 points, losing just three games, and conceding only 33.

Nevertheless, they have sold Dejan Lovren to Zenit St Petersburg in this transfer window and that has opened a spot for a new defender in the squad.

It does appear that manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to recruit one, too, and there have been a number of reports of potential targets.

Ben White, the Brighton & Hove Albion defender who spent the season on loan at Leeds United, and Kalidou Koulibaly, the Napoli centre-back, have both been mentioned as possible acquisitions.

And Sport Witness carries a report from AS claiming that Sevilla’s Diego Carlos is on the Reds’ shortlist too.

The 27-year-old arrived at the club last summer from Nantes, making 42 appearances in 2019/20, and could now move for a huge fee.

The report states that Carlos is aware of interest in him, with “dizzying offers” being made. Both the Reds and Manchester City, along with Bayern Munich, are named as potential suitors.

He has a €75 million (£67.4m) release clause but Sevilla are said to be willing to negotiate that price.

It remains to be seen, then, if Liverpool can drive that price down as they look to sign the centre-back this summer.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Carlos is a top defender.

Per WhoScored, he has averaged one tackle per game in La Liga, 1.1 interceptions, and a staggering five clearances. He is only dribbled past on 0.3 occasions.

This is a remarkably good player and Sevilla are clearly preparing for an auction this summer.

He was signed from Nantes last summer and already he has some of Europe’s elite queuing up to secure his signature.

The defender is the finished article, at the age of 27, and should be nearing his peak.

With Klopp on the lookout for a partner for Virgil van Dijk, the Brazilian could be an exceptional acquisition.
