West Ham United have been handed a transfer boost.

The club are attempting to restructure David Moyes’ squad after a disappointing season in the Premier League.

They flirted with relegation throughout the 2019/20 season, and finished 16th.

The Hammers finished five points clear of 18th-placed AFC Bournemouth, thanks to a four-game unbeaten run at the end of the campaign.

They beat Norwich City 4-0, Watford 3-1, and drew with both Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Both Norwich and Watford were ultimately relegated, and the Hammers will be hoping to strengthen their squad this summer as they look to climb away from trouble next term.

And Football Insider reports that they have a plan in place to sign a defender in this transfer window.

Nottingham Forest defender Matty Cash is a target, with Sheffield United also interested in securing the 23-year-old.

The right-back has already been the subject of a bid from the Blades, but their £10 million offer was rejected.

Cash, though, has told Forest that he is keen to leave the club and join a Premier League side.

Forest ultimately finished seventh in the second-tier, missing out on the play-offs on the final day of the season.

West Ham are keen to recruit a new right-back after both Pablo Zabaleta and Jeremy Ngakia left the club, and they are interested in securing Cash’s signature.

They initially made an enquiry in January but were knocked back.

GIVEMESPORT’S Harry Sherlock says…

Cash has been a star at Forest for some time.

He has made 141 appearances for the club, and can play at both right-back and on the right of midfield.

Forest remain in a strong position, with his contract not set to expire until 2023, but the fact that he is keen to leave strengthens the hand of the Hammers.

Both West Ham and the Blades could get a preferential deal in this window as a result, and sort out their right-back position for the next few years.

Cash is an excellent defender, capable of getting up and down the pitch and winning the ball back regularly.

He is still only 23, and can only improve as he takes to the Premier League.

West Ham need to try to get this deal done.
