It might not be the summer that supporters hoped for, but Newcastle United still have big plans.

After finishing 13th in the Premier League last term Steve Bruce is hoping to take the Magpies into the top half of the table and beyond.

It's been years since the club have flirted with a place in Europe and fans would love nothing more than to see their club mixing it with the big boys once again.

Of course the recent takeover blow is still fresh in everyone's minds, with Amanda Staveley and the Saudi-backed consortium's £300million proposal to take over the club being withdrawn.

But that doesn't mean that the club can't aim high.

While funds could be limited, Newcastle continue to be linked with a number of stars who would be warmly received by supporters on Tyneside.

The latest player to be linked is Ollie Watkins.

Chronicle Live have reported that the Brentford striker is of interest to Newcastle United.

Watkins scored an impressive 26 goals for the Bees this season as they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion, before missing out on going up via the play-offs as a result of an extra-time defeat to Fulham at Wembley.

While Thomas Frank's side would no doubt love to keep hold of their star attacker, it's claimed that the 24-year-old has a release clause of £18million which became active as a result of missing out on promotion.

Described by Noel Whelan as 'a really, really special player', Watkins is also attracting the attention of clubs such as Leeds United, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This is exactly the sort of signing that Newcastle United need to be targeting.

Ollie Watkins has set the Championship alight over the last 12 months and so it's only right that he looks set to be afforded a chance in the Premier League.

Steve Bruce's side are in desperate need of a new strikeforce for with Joelinton flattering to deceive since his big-money arrival.

As well as scoring 26 goals over the season, Watkins is a bit of an all-rounder who is fast, powerful and works incredibly hard.

That makes him the ideal candidate to lead the line at St James' Park, with his likeable persona enough to get supporters onside.

In relative terms, £18million for the striker is not a vast sum when you've got a player who promises to score plenty of goals - not to mention the fact that there's significant sell-on potential if he was to hit the ground running.

This is certainly one to watch and one that supporters should be very excited about, should it come off.
