The Champions League mini-tournament begins on Wednesday night in Lisbon.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the competition was put on hold for four months - but returned last week to settle the remaining last-16 ties.

Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Lyon and Manchester City all booked their places in the last eight, joining four teams who had already qualified back in March.

Paris Saint-Germain and Atalanta, of course, were amongst the first through and they meet at the Estadio da Luz on Wednesday.

PSG are amongst the favourites to win the Champions League, while their opponents have shocked many by even reaching the last eight.

It's a real David vs Goliath situation - and that suggestion was further hammered home by the revelation that Neymar alone earns more money than the entire Atalanta team.

Yes, really.

Neymar is PSG's top earner

According to The Sun, Neymar is on £620,000-per-week at PSG and that sees him earn £32.2million in a year.

The Atalanta side, in contrast, collectively earn between £30m and £32m - meaning their entire team is on less than just ONE of PSG's superstars.

Sounds absolutely crazy, doesn't it.

It's not just Neymar on the big bucks either. His partner in crime, Kylian Mbappe, is the club's next highest earner, raking in £280,000 per week - or £14.5m a year.

Neymar and Mbappe are making a mint

Compare that to Atalanta, with their three top earners taking home a rather modest £4.5m per year between them.

Alejandro Gomez, Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel are each on an annual wage of £1.5m, which works out as around £29,000 per week.

PSG's superstars may be on much more money than their opponents, but both teams have made it to the same stage in the Champions League.

Atalanta have made the last eight

Yes, the French champions are favourites to progress, but this is football and anything can happen.

It might well be a famous night under the lights in Lisbon.
