It's been quite a 12 months for Liverpool who have asserted themselves as one of the top sides in world football.

After winning last year's Champions League, the World Club Championship and then the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp's men are surely the best team in the world.

But even the best need to strengthen.

The general feeling is that top clubs should improve themselves while they're still dominating, and that's exactly what Liverpool will be looking to do.

However it will take a special player to improve this team.

Thiago Alcantara is one player who has been linked, with reports suggesting that he could be available for just £27million.

The Spaniard is entering the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich, and according to German football expert Raphael Honigstein, Thiago would be a game-changer at Anfield.

Speaking on the Sky Sports' Transfer Talk podcast, he said: "In Germany they are saying that if Liverpool buy Thiago, they'll win every game next year!

"He's just been so good. If there's one player they're missing in that midfield it's that technical player. More of a creator and a dribbler, somebody who scores spectacular goals and can find a pass.

"It's not a player that Liverpool have accommodated in recent years and it would change the dynamic of their midfield if you find space for him.

"Bayern had an offer of a contract extension on the table. They thought they'd agreed, but he's changed his mind. The club assumed that he must already have a deal in place with someone else, but that side are yet to reveal their hand.

"There's been no firm offer yet from anyone, but Bayern are bracing themselves for Liverpool because that's the rumour in the dressing room. But we haven't seen any offer yet and Liverpool have distanced themselves from making a move for Thiago. That could just be part of their strategy, but Bayern are more or less resigned to him leaving.

"I think that would be a big blow for them as he's more or less been running games for them and is an absolute key player in my mind. It'll be very difficult for Bayern to find a player who is like Thiago, who's so unique in his technical ability. It's a blow for Bayern and something that they didn't expect."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

It seems that a deal for Thiago Alcantara is unlikely.

But that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be an incredible move if it was to come off.

The Spaniard is a vital cog in Bayern Munich's side, but with just one year left on his deal it seems that his future will be away from the German giants.

Valued at £43.2million by Transfermarkt, the midfielder would be a huge bargain if he was available for £27million.

While he's 29-years-of-age, that fee could be appealing given the lack of sell-on potential that he'd be likely to have.

It's certainly one to watch for Jurgen Klopp's side, but I'm still sceptical that the interest is sufficient enough to push it over the line.
