It's set to be quite a summer for Newcastle United.

That said, no one knows whether it'll be memorable for good reasons or bad.

The end of the Premier League season saw supporters filled with optimism as a big-money takeover of the club drew nearer.

That £300million deal from a Saudi-backed consortium, and fronted by Amanda Staveley, would have made the Magpies the richest side in England.

With ratification from the Premier League all that was needed, you can't blame supporters for feeling distraught at the fact that everything went wrong.

As a result of lengthy delays from the authorities, the buying party withdrew their interest - much to the fury of the Newcastle fans.

While speculation suggests that the deal to buy the club from Mike Ashley could be reignited, attention must now turn to strengthening in the transfer market.

Given Ashley's desire to sell the club it seems that Newcastle will only have a limited transfer budget in which to strengthen the squad.

That is why this latest update could bring some surprising good news.

Reports from Chronicle Live have suggested that the Magpies could pocket a seven-figure windfall as a result of Ivan Toney's future.

The Peterborough United striker played for the Tynesiders before completing his switch to the League One side in 2018.

The 24-year-old scored an impressive 26 goals for the Posh this term, leading to speculation that he could move on.

Several clubs have already been linked with a move for the striker, most notably Celtic and Brentford who are both said to have tabled offers.

With Peterborough United said to be holding out for a fee of £10million, Newcastle could be set to receive a significant sum after inserting a 'very large clause' into the deal.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Newcastle United could be about to benefit from an incredibly shrewd piece of business here.

While Ivan Toney's move to Peterborough United didn't represent a huge cash fee, the Magpies always knew that the striker had the potential to play at the highest level.

Toney looks all-but certain to move on this summer with significant interest from Scotland, the Premier League and the Championship.

If that happens then the Magpies will be laughing.

To get a seven-figure windfall as a result of such a deal is a massive achievement, and surely deserves credit from supporters.

With funds set to be limited any funds coming in would be gratefully received, and that means that fans will be watching the Ivan Toney transfer saga with keen interest as a result.
