Everton's summer has so far been rather lacklustre.

We are now just weeks away from the start of the new campaign, but like many other Premier League club's, they have yet to do any business.

The issue for Marcel Brands, however, is that they don't even look close to concluding anything.

Everton have tried and failed to sign Lille defender Gabriel but there's only ever been small murmurs when it's come to other targets.

The likes of Leon Bailey and Thomas Lemar have been mentioned in the same breath as the Toffees over the last few weeks but nothing has materialised.

For a side that finished well below expectations in 12th this season, this isn't an ideal scenario.

It's important that Brands and Carlo Ancelotti crack on with their plans quickly before they get left behind by some of their rivals.

Marcel Brands in the stands

Southampton, who finished one place above them, have already landed Kyle Walker-Peters and Mohammed Salisu.

However, a new target has emerged for Everton and coincidentally, it's someone they sold not too long ago.

A report from Sky Sports suggests that the Merseysiders are one of a number of teams interested in signing left-back Antonee Robinson.

The defender was on the verge of signing for AC Milan from Wigan Athletic in January before the deal fell through.

As a result, he has now caught the eyes of multiple Premier League clubs.

Wigan have already accepted a £2m offer from Sheffield United for Robinson's services but late interventions from Everton and Fulham are causing the deal to stall.

Antonee Robinson

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Robinson has had an absolute whirlwind year at Wigan Athletic.

He felt the brutality of Marco Silva last season by being sold and then after becoming an established international for the USA, saw a dream move to the San Siro fall through at the last minute.

The 23-year-old was then part of the side that got relegated from the Championship and had to go through the horrendous ordeal of administration.

Robinson is only young but he has already suffered a huge amount in his football career.

Antonee Robinson vs Boro

Being shipped on by Silva last summer would have been gutting but it's a testament to the player himself to bounce back. He was a favourite of David Unsworth rising through the academy and Robinson has been quick to thank him throughout his career.

Speaking in 2017 after signing a two-year contract, he said: "Unsy has been a big help for me.

He keeps it nice and simple - tells me what I need to do and tells me where I need to improve. He doesn’t sugar coat anything and that is what I really needed."

Everton know Robinson well so with Leighton Baines retiring, this would surely be a safe investment from the club. At just £2m as well, they can't really go wrong.
