Barcelona's disappointing season was capped off by a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich on Friday night.

For the first time since 2008, the Blaugrana have finished the campaign trophyless.

Not only that, but defeat to Bayern in the Champions League has been described as 'rock bottom' by Gerard Pique.

So what happens next? Will Barca bounce back in style next season? Given what we witnessed last night, and the poor performances throughout the last campaign, it's hard to see that happening.

If reports are to be believed, they may have to do it without Lionel Messi too.

For so long, it seemed that he'd never play anywhere but the Camp Nou, but speculation has been building for months that the greatest off all time could be on his way out.

But where would he go? Following Barcelona's humiliation against Bayern, GIVEMESPORT selects seven potential destinations for Messi.

Messi could leave Barcelona this summer

Paris Saint-Germain

Perhaps one of the only clubs in the world that could afford Messi's transfer fee. Should any club want to sign him, they'd have to activate his €700m release clause.

Or would they? According to El Pais, the Argentine can depart on his own terms at the end of any season.

We're not saying he'd come cheap, but PSG would certainly be able to afford almost any fee - and his wages as well.

Messi might fancy a move to France

Manchester City

Will a reunion with Pep Guardiola be on the cards? Like PSG, we'd expect Man City to be able to afford Messi, both in terms of transfer fee and wages.

The Barcelona captain, of course, has never played in the Premier League and some fans have been critical of that.

We have no doubt that he'd still rip up the English top-flight, even at 33.

Could Messi be in the Premier League one day?

Inter Miami/MLS

It's long been reported that Messi could finish his career in the MLS with David Beckham's Inter Miami.

The newly-formed franchise will be desperate to get some star names in their side and names don't come bigger than Messi.

We must admit though, it's a bit of a long shot. Plus, the Argentine is far from ready to finish out his career quietly in America.

The Chinese Super League

Like suggesting Messi will play in the MLS, it is hard to see him fancying a move to China.

But, plenty of big names have gone before him. Oscar, Hulk, Paulinho and Stephan El Shaarawy have all gone before him and have made a mint playing in Asia.

We can't really see it happening, but never say never.

Messi could follow Oscar to China

Bayern Munich

You might be wondering why we've put Bayern Munich on this list. Well, Messi is out of contract next summer and the Bundesliga champions love a free transfer.

Both Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery were important forwards for the club well into their 30s, so Messi's advanced age probably wouldn't put Bayern off.

The GOAT would almost certainly add more silverware to his collection in Germany too.

Juventus

Just a couple of months ago, Juventus were amongst the favourites to sign Messi when his situation at Barcelona reportedly soured.

Like Bayern, the Turin club love a free transfer - just ask Aaron Ramsey, Dani Alves and Emre Can.

Plus, we REALLY want to see Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo finally link up on the same team. Make. It. Happen.

Newell's Old Boys

Perhaps the most likely of all moves for Messi. He's never ruled out a return to where it all began.

The little magician is a lifelong supporter of Newell's Old Boys and joined the club when he was just six.

He stayed for a further six years and scored over 500 goals as a youth player before joining Barca. Could Messi finish his career back where it all started?

Messi could return to NOB one day

So, it looks like Messi won't be short of options if he really wants to leave Barcelona. But the key, of course, is if he really wants to go.

The Argentine has never played senior football anywhere else and will easily go down as the greatest player the Blaugrana have ever had.

If Messi stays, his legacy will be untouchable, but if he goes, we will see him light up the pitch somewhere else, even at the age of 33.
