Kris Commons played down the significance of Wednesday night's impressive 4-0 thumping of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park as he looked forward to the crunch Old Firm game at Ibrox on Sunday.

The Celtic midfielder was in outstanding form as he bagged a first-half double with Gary Hooper's strike leaving the home side reeling by the time the interval whistle sounded. Celtic striker Anthony Stokes added the fourth after the break as Neil Lennon's side went within a point of Rangers at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, having played a game less.

However, the Scotland international knows the trip to Govan is unlikely to prove as easy and he said: "It was a clean sheet, we scored four goals and it could have been five or six so it is a massive confidence booster going in to a very difficult game on Sunday. But with all Old Firm games, it doesn't matter what you do beforehand because they are one-off games."

He added: "It is important that we are in the right frame of mind because it is going to be a very tough game and one that I am looking forward to being a part of.

"I'm sure the atmosphere is going to be electric and hopefully I am going to be on the winning side."

Killie's caretaker manager Kenny Shiels tried not to be too downbeat after watching side being comprehensively beaten.

"There was a lot of positive things that came out of that performance in terms of the work the players put in," the Irishman said.

"They were up against a quality team and they worked right to the end and they tried to salvage something.

"We have a good dressing room and our boys will be ready for the next game.

"We go to Dundee United on Saturday and the next game is always the most important so we are looking forward to it."
