Barcelona are a club in crisis.

Lionel Messi wants to leave, Luis Suarez could be departing and Quique Setien has been sacked.

That's without even mentioning the fact that were eaten up and swallowed whole by Bayern Munich.

That 8-2 defeat last Friday was truly flabbergasting. Here we sat watching one of the greatest club sides of the millennium rolled over in unrelenting fashion.

Messi looked disinterested, Nelson Semedo put in one of the worst European performances in recent memory, and Arturo Vidal was so dumbfounded that he leant over the advertising hoardings and was almost sick.

This wasn't even a result that would be normal in the group stages, let alone the quarter-finals.

For Setien, it proved to be the final blow in a truly ridiculous year for Barca so far. It wouldn't be a great surprise that come 2021, Josep Maria Bartomeu was no longer in Catalonia either.

Quique Setien

Barcelona are planning a restructure of the squad, all but five members of their squad have reportedly been put up for sale and now they are tasked with bringing in a new manager.

That will supposedly be Ronald Koeman but with or without the Dutchman, Bartomeu wants Neymar back at the Nou Camp.

A report from Sport claims that the Spanish giants have reignited their pursuit of the Brazilian who left La Liga behind in a world-record transfer to PSG a few years ago.

Barca had ruled out a move for Neymar a few months ago because of the economic climate but now they have a bargaining chip.

It's claimed that Bartomeu wants rid of Antonine Griezmann and could use the Frenchman in an exchange deal, plus the sum of €50m-€60m (£45m-£54m).

The club president sees Neymar as Barcelona's main objective this summer.

The player's current value, per Transferamrkt, is £115.2m.

Neymar and Mbappe

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Could this signal the end of Messi's time in the north of Spain? Quite possibly.

After all, one of the reasons Neymar left Barca behind in the first place was that he was in the Argentine's shadow. He wanted to be the main man and at PSG, he's well and truly become that.

He is one of the best players in world football, bagging 70 goals in 83 appearances for the Parisians.

Neymar

However, if Barca want to go in a new direction, signing someone like the Brazilian could be pivotal. Messi is the Barcelona skipper but the way he played during that loss last Friday almost looked depressing.

With that in mind, a new figurehead is needed, someone who is going to grab the game by the scruff of the neck, someone who isn't approaching the twilight of their career.

There is no doubting Messi but he is now 33. Neymar, on the other hand, is 28 and in his prime. Perhaps it's time for a changing of the guard?
