Lyon may have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, but they'll be hoping to go one step further this evening.

While a clash against Bayern Munich is certainly not favourable, there's no escaping the fact that you need to beat the best to be considered the best.

However after overcoming the obstacles of Juventus and Manchester City in the last two rounds, confidence will be sky-high in the Lyon camp.

There's no doubting that the current Lyon team is a talented crop of players - after all it's no fluke that they've reached the final stages of Europe's elite competition.

A clash with the German champions poses a huge threat as they come up against some of the worlds' best players.

That said, we know that it's a challenge that they'll relish.

But while Lyon go into the game as huge underdogs, that hasn't always been the case.

The French giants have boasted some huge names in their ranks over recent years, with many now regarded as the biggest and best in the world.

If only Lyon had been able to keep this lot to themselves.

With that in mind GIVEMESPORT have taken a look at Lyon's all-star XI which we're fairly sure would have seen them regarded as one of the strongest sides on the continent.

Hugo Lloris - Goalkeeper

The Tottenham stopper was a bit of a hero in his homeland prior to his Premier League move. He may be approaching the end of his career but France's number one easily makes the cut.

Rafael - Right back

The only current player to keep their place in our all-star XI is the former Manchester United man, with the Brazilian enjoying a five-year spell at the French side.

Samuel Umtiti - Centre back

Barcelona's defensive colossus has had a mixed spell since moving to the Nou Camp but he's still regarded as one of the best in the business. Plenty of that credit belongs to Lyon.

Dejan Lovren - Centre back

A controversial choice, but the former Liverpool man would certainly regard himself as one of the best defenders in the world.

Ferland Mendy - Left back

The Real Madrid man may have only moved to Spain last year but he's already regarded as one of the best wing-backs on the continent.

Tanguy Ndombele - Central midfielder

His debut season with Tottenham Hotspur may not have been the best in the world, but he wasn't the only one to underperform. Based on his form at Lyon, Jose Mourinho should be able to get plenty more from him this term.

Miralem Pjanic - Central midfielder

Widely regarded as one of the best in the world, you could be forgiven for forgetting that the Bosnian Maestro did much of his developing at Lyon.

Nabil Fekir - Central midfielder

A key Lyon player for six years, the French international completed a move to Real Betis last summer where he continued his impressive form.

Now in his prime, he may be ready for another big move.

Anthony Martial - Forward

The Manchester United man has the potential to be one of the best in the world - we just need to see it more often. However when Martial is on form there's no stopping the former Lyon man.

Karim Benzema - Forward

He may attract a bit of criticism, but few can argue with the Frenchman's success at Real Madrid. Let's not forget it was his time at Lyon which ensured he was ready for the challenge at the Bernabeu.

Alexandre Lacazette - Forward

The Frenchman is one of Arsenal's main men under Mikel Arteta. While speculation continues to link him with a move away, the former Lyon man is a very popular man among the Gunners' supporters who would love him to stick around.
