Former England striker Emile Heskey says Darren Bent can fire Aston Villa to glory next season.

The England forward hit his latest Villa goal in Saturday's win over West Ham United, where he partnered Heskey up front.

Bent has scored six goals in 11 games for Villa to ease their relegation fears, and Heskey says the forward can be a big influence next season.

“Benty is going to get his goals," said Heskey.

“He’s been absolutely brilliant since he’s joined us. I definitely feel he can be a 20-goal-a-season man for us.

"He’s shown that finishing class over the years for every club he’s played for. He’s been playing in the top flight for many years and he always shows his class and quality in front of goal.

“They say he had a bad time at Spurs but he was still scoring goals for them and hit 17 there in the one season.

“That’s a great rate of goals. Hopefully he can take that sort of form and the form he’s shown at Villa into next season.

“There’s no reason why he can’t. He’ll be a big player for us next season.”

With the Villians now in the top half of the Barclays Premier League, Bent's goals will be crucial to keeping the club there for the remainder of the season, as they look for a strong finish after a disappointing season.

Villa lost Martin O'Neil at the beginning of the season and replacement Gerard Houllier has endured a difficult start to his time at Villa Park, but will be looking to Bent to kick-start a new era for the midlanders.
