Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies is living his best life right now.The 19-year-old has been one of the club's finest players on their incredible run in the Champions League, securing a place in the final after defeating Lyon 3-0 in the semi-finals on Wednesday.Serge Gnabry scored a superb first-half brace against the French side, before Robert Lewandowski bagged his 55th goal of the season to tee up a clash with Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon.

Davies' impeccable form

As far as Davies will be concerned, though, keeping a clean sheet will have been the main bonus from qualifying for the final and it was another fantastic performance from the Canadian.

Nevertheless, it's because of Bayern's dizzyingly high standards, that the eventually-routine win over Lyon seems a little par for the course after their historic win over Barcelona.

Davies was, as you'd expect, one of the stars during that famous 8-2 thrashing and produced one of the best assists you'll see all season for Bayern's fifth goal, courtesy of Joshua Kimmich.

Davies' adoration of Messi

The Bayern starlet capped off a stunning performance by bombing down the left flank, leaving Nelson Semedo for dead with a stunning skill, before turning provider for his defensive partner.

What made the victory all the sweeter, however, was the fact that Davies was playing against his footballing hero: Lionel Messi.

And according to the Mirror, when asked about his idolisation of Messi before the thrashing, he said: “Honestly, I'm lost for words – a dream come true.

“My mum called me yesterday and then my dad hopped on the phone, and he was like: 'So you’re playing against your favourite player, I see.' Growing up, I used to watch him all the time and now I'm defending against him; it's going to be a whole different ball game.”

Messi didn't hand over his shirt

So, what's the significance of that after the Lyon result? Well, BT Sport decided to catch up with Davies by asking whether he got the chance to collect Messi's jersey after last week.

Besides, can you blame Davies for trying to get his hero's shirt after such a historic win?

Well, sadly for the Canadian, he revealed that Messi was too upset to hand over his top, explaining: "I asked for it, but I think he was a little bit upset, so next time, hopefully."

I can't say I blame Messi, to tell you the truth. Both for hygiene and dignity reasons

And in fairness to Davies, he looked pretty understanding when he explained what happened.

Messi has shown in the past that he's incredibly generous with handing out his jersey to opposition players, so it's not as though this was some sort of inditement of the Barca star as an arrogant player.

Frankly, if you'd had an embarrassing day at the office like that, the last thing you'd want is a super fan whose made a mockery of you asking for something to remember the evening by.

But even regardless of that, given the current pandemic, UEFA have been recommending that players do not swap shirts and thus, it was very sensible of Messi to refuse the approach.

Whether or not Messi did so because of that or, as Davies suspects, he was simply upset, remains to be seen, but it sets a very good example after what happened with Neymar vs RB Leipzig.

Reports that the Brazilian could be banned for the final seem wide of the mark, but it goes without saying that the fewer shirts swapped, the lower the chances that any virus could be passed on.

So, I'm sorry, Alphonso, but you will indeed have to wait until next season... for multiple reasons.
