Barcelona have turned to Ronald Koeman to help steer them out of a crisis following a miserable end to the season.

Quique Setien was already on the brink after Barcelona handed the La Liga title to Real Madrid, and there was no way he could continue following the humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.

So now it’s Koeman’s turn to try to make Barcelona a major force in Europe once again.

The 57-year-old, who won four La Liga titles as a Barcelona player in the 90s, returns off the back of a decent spell in charge of the Netherlands national team.

He guided Oranje to the final of the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League and qualified for Euro 2020 after winning six out of eight qualifiers.

And he was a respected figure among the Dutch national side.

“The Netherlands are losing an experienced and successful coach,” Liverpool and Netherlands centre-back Virgil van Dijk wrote on Twitter.

But not all of Koeman’s former players view him so highly.

Former Everton star Gerard Deulofeu played under Koeman at Goodison Park and he’s hit out at his former manager in an interview on Cataluna Radio.

Deulofeu and Koeman didn’t enjoy a great relationship during their time on Merseyside.

The Spanish winger went from appearing in 33 games under Roberto Martinez in 2015/16 to playing just 13 times under Koeman in the following season. He was loaned out to AC Milan in January of 2017 before returning to Barcelona that summer.

And when quizzed about his time working with Koeman, Deulofeu didn’t have anything positive to say.

"I can tell you about Koeman from my personal experience, and I have very little to tell you about Koeman," he said, per Marca.

"He provided me absolutely nothing.

"I wasn't happy, I asked to leave and I went to Milan.

"We'll see how he does at the Camp Nou."

Deulofeu wasn't done there.

The Watford star, 26, said he didn't care much for Barcelona's current woes and hit out at the Spanish club's treatment of its youth players today.

"The truth is that Barcelona's [situation] does not bother me," he said.

"In fact, right now, I don't care."

He added: "At Barcelona, they have not had patience with La Masia for years.

"If you give [the youngsters] time, they learn the style of the first team.

"There are players, many of us have come from there, but not patience.

"Now there will be changes, but they are years behind."

Stinging words from a player who experienced first-hand the benefits of Barcelona's once-thriving youth academy.
