Liverpool are on top of the world right now.

It's been quite a 12 months for Jurgen Klopp's side who have very much established themselves as one of the top sides on the planet.

After winning the Premier League, last season's Champions League and the Club World Championship - the Reds are the undisputed best team in the world - at least until Sunday's clash between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

But with preparations underway for the new season, it's up to Klopp to make sure that his team are ready to go again.

While signing new players is clearly a priority, it's essential that they keep their current squad together as well.

The cohesion among Klopp's side is second-to-none, but that could be at risk if the latest reports are to be believed.

According to Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad, via the Daily Express, Georginio Wijnaldum is attracting the attention of Barcelona.

The Spanish giants are in a period of flux after a disastrous season that culminated in a devastating 8-2 collapse against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

However after appointing Ronald Koeman it seems that things are about to change.

Koeman is a big fan of Wijnaldum after working with the midfielder in the Netherlands' international set-up.

The Liverpool man has just one year left on his contract at Anfield, meaning that the club risk losing him for nothing unless he agrees to an extension before January.

That means that Barcelona could negotiate a cut-price deal for the former Newcastle midfielder.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would be a disaster for Liverpool.

Georginio Wijnaldum has been absolutely key for Jurgen Klopp's side over the last two years and was integral to the club's trophy haul.

He perfectly suits Klopp's system and to lose him would be a big blow.

That said, I can certainly see him being a success with Barcelona.

Particularly under the leadership of Ronald Koeman, Wijnaldum could be exactly the sort of player that they need to ensure that the team functions both defensively and offensively.

Given his contract situation, the midfielder could be available for a knockdown fee - something that could certainly appeal to the Spanish giants as they go through a tricky financial period.

What his potential departure would mean for Liverpool is unclear, but it could be the case that they need to go back into the market for a replacement.
