Robert Lewandowski might win the treble with Bayern Munich and break Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most goals in a Champions League campaign - and he still won’t win the Ballon d’Or award.
The Bayern striker has been sensational this season but France Football’s decision to cancel their annual ceremony means he won’t get the accolade he deserves.
In any other season, Lewandowski would be the clear favourite. He could still scoop FIFA’s The Best prize, but that doesn’t hold the same level of prestige as the Ballon d’Or.
He was urged, rather humorously, to start a petition to get the ceremony back on by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.
“If I’m Lewandowski and they have cancelled the Ballon d’Or, I’m starting up a petition to get it back on," Ferdinand recently told TEAMtalk.
"Aside from the year when Luka Modric won it, Messi and Ronaldo have dominated that award for the last 12 years and Lewandowski has taken himself to the next level this season.
"I can’t believe they have cancelled it. It’s cruel, that is a good word to describe it.
“Lewandowski deserves to win that award for what he has done this season and if he leads Bayern Munich to the Champions League and they still decide they won’t give it out to him, it’s not right.”
We can’t confirm whether it was Lewandowski himself - he might be working undercover - but a petition actually has been set up demanding the 31-year-old be awarded the gong.
It was created on Change.org by Robert Illguth and has close to 400 signatures at the time of writing.
The petition reads: “France Football has decided (without any good/reasonable reason) to not award the Ballon d'Or this year.
“Exactly when Lewandowski became dangerous to the two annual winners (Messi + Ronaldo), France Football has decided to not award the Ballon d'Or.
“This is a huge disappointment and feels like a huge scam/fraud to many of us football fans.
“Almost every football fan was convinced that Robert Lewandowski earned the Ballon d'Or this year.
“So we are demanding France Football to hand over the Ballon d'Or to Robert Lewandowski this year for an outstanding season.
“Please Share and Sign this Petition.
“Thank you football fans for your support.”
