It’s easy to forget how much Bayern Munich struggled at the start of the season.
The Bundesliga outfit won just seven out of their opening 14 league matches and dropped as low as seventh in December.
A 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt last November spelled the end for Niko Kovacic at the Allianz Arena.
Less than a year on and they are one win away from completing the treble.
Hansi Flick has revitalised the Bavarians. They are unbeaten in their last 29 competitive games, winning 28 of them, and are in the midst of an incredible run.
They will hope to continue that when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on Sunday.
Bayern are the favourites and it’s not hard to see why. They thumped Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals and then thrashed Barcelona 8-2 to reach the final.
The greatest team in the world right now? Quite possibly.
That idea is improved further by their placing at the top of UEFA’s five-year club ranking.
Using a points system to score the top clubs in Europe, Bayern Munich have joined Real Madrid in first place.
Bayern have won the Bundesliga title in each of the past five years. They’ve reached the semi-finals of the Champions League three times and the final once.
And they now sit at the very top with 134 points.
Here are the top 30 clubs in ascending order:
1. Bayern Munich | 134 points
1=. Real Madrid | 134 points
3. Barcelona | 128 points
4. Atletico Madrid | 127 points
5. Juventus | 117 points
Atletico Madrid’s placing might seem quite high on first glance but they did win the Europa League in 2017/18 and reached the Champions League final in 2015/16.
6. Manchester City | 116 points
7. Paris Saint-Germain | 113 points
8. Sevilla | 100 points
8=. Manchester United | 100 points
10. Liverpool | 99 points
Manchester United ahead of Liverpool? That’s highly questionable on first viewing.
However, the Reds didn’t collate any points in 2016/17 as a result of missing out on European football.
That’s why Jurgen Klopp’s side are a point behind United.
11. Arsenal | 91 points
12. Shakhtar Donetsk | 85 points
12=. Borussia Dortmund | 85 points
12=. Tottenham Hotspur | 85 points
15. Lyon | 83 points
15=. Chelsea | 83 points
17. AS Roma | 80 points
18. Napoli | 77 points
19. FC Porto | 75 points
20. Benfica | 70 points
Chelsea won the Europa League in 2018/19 but like Liverpool, they didn’t qualify for European football in 2016/17 and therefore didn’t collect any points.
21. Ajax | 69.5 points
22. Zenit St. Petersburg | 64 points
23. Bayer Leverkusen | 61 points
24. FC Basel | 58.5 points
25. Villarreal | 56 points
26. Dinamo Kyiv | 55 points
27. Valencia | 54 points
27=. Besiktas | 54 points
29. FC Salzburg | 53.5 points
30. Sporting Lisbon | 50 points
