What a summer it's going to be for Barcelona.

The Spanish side are at a real crossroads as they make big plans for the future ahead.

By their typically high standards, Barca had an absolute shocker last term after losing their La Liga title to rivals Real Madrid.

That was before a disaster-class in the Champions League.

Barcelona are a side who are typically touted as contenders to win the competition, but their quarter final clash with Bayern Munich proved that they're miles off contending for that particular honour.

To lose 8-2 is outrageous, and it's that result that has triggered change.

As well as replacing Quique Setien with Ronald Koeman, the Spanish side relieved Eric Abidal of his duties as sporting director.

But the changes might not end there.

In fact, things could be about to get a whole lot worse before they get better.

According to reports from La Gazzetta Dello Sport, via The Sun, Lionel Messi could be about to leave the Nou Camp for a new challenge in Italy.

It's claimed that the Argentine legend is considering his future at the club after growing frustrated at the lack of direction currently in place.

That has led to reports that Inter Milan could be plotting an audacious move to land the 33-year-old this summer.

That speculation has also been fuelled with claims in the report that Messi's father and agent, Jorge, has purchased a 'luxury pad' in the Milan region.

With Lautaro Martinez a long-term target for Barcelona, there's potential room for manoeuvre, however you can guarantee that the Spanish giants will be doing everything possible to keep hold of him.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

I can't even imagine the reaction if this was to happen.

When you think of Lionel Messi, you immediately think of Barcelona - the two go hand in hand.

To see the Argentine in the black and blue of Inter Milan - or any other club for that matter - will look SO weird.

But at the end of the day, he's entitled to move on if he wants to.

Messi has given so much to Barcelona since arriving their as a 13-year-old.

While other players have moved on freely, he's stayed loyal to the Spanish side, and that deserves major credit.

But if he decides to move on then he should be given the club's blessing.
