Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was arrested on the island of Mykonos in the early hours of Friday morning after allegedly attacking police.

Maguire, United’s captain, is reported to have been involved in a heated bust-up with fellow English tourists before police intervened.

The £85 million England international then became ‘very abusive and aggressive’ towards the officers, according to the Daily Mail.

It’s not great publicity for Maguire or United as the centre-back gets ready for the 2020/21 season.

He spent the night in cell along with two other men. All three are expected to appear before a state prosecutor on the nearby island of Syros later on Friday.

Two of the police officers suffered facial injuries after allegedly being hurled to the ground, punched and kicked.

Maguire and the two other men are facing charges of aggravated assault as a result of the incident.

According to the police, two groups of Englishmen were brawling outside Mykonos’ Fabrica bar late at night. Three men then rounded on officers when they tried to intervene.

“When the brawl was all sorted out, one of the two groups - with the football players - started verbally abusing officers. There were several policemen there,” Petros Vassilakis, a police spokesman, said.

“At some point, one of the three members of the group - they were aged 27, 28, and 29 - threw a swing at one of the policemen and a fight ensued.

“All of the three were arrested but during the effort to do so, the other two, including the football player, got violent also. They threw down at least two policemen, hit them with their fists and kicked them.

“I can't tell you what they were telling us. All English swear words against the authorities and against the work of the police.

“All three, including the football player, are being held in custody, locked up in Mykonos cell. They will appear before a state prosecutor on the island of Syros later today to be charged with aggravated assault.”

A police source told the Mail that police had been called to respond to raucous behaviour outside a bar.

“The group were very noisy and some of the local residents called the police as they had not left the area,' the source told the MailOnline.

“The group of men were in a mini bus and after the police arrived the followed them. The officers pulled the van over. Two of the men got out and there was an argument and they began attacking the police. Maguire was very abusive and aggressive towards the officers.

“He was arrested and handcuffed and taken to the police station on preliminary charges of attempted assault and using abusive language to police.”

According to sources at Man United, the former Leicester City defender now plans to cut short his holiday and return to the UK.

Meanwhile, Maguire’s lawyers are awaiting further information on the charges he might face.

“We are expecting more information from Mykonos as clarification is needed over exactly what happened and what charges he will face, if any,” the lawyers said.
