Chelsea are like a dog with a bone this summer.

After 12 months under a transfer ban it seems that the London side are looking to make up for lost time.

Deals have already been completed for Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, but there's still work to be done if they're to meet their objectives.

While finishing fourth in the Premier League was a huge achievement in Frank Lampard's first season in charge, the task now is to kick on.

Liverpool and Manchester City have dominated over the last two years in particular, and the Blues are now aiming to close the gap on the title race.

But if they're to do that they'll need to add even more quality to their side.

Kai Havertz is being heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but while signing young players seems to be the aim of the game, the need for experience is real.

That's what makes this latest report even more interesting.

The Athletic have claimed that Chelsea are in advanced talks over a move for Thiago Silva.

The 35-year-old is available on a free transfer after failing to agree a new deal with current side Paris Saint-Germain.

The centre-back is due to play his final game for the French side on Sunday evening as they take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

After that, Silva will be free to join whoever he wishes.

Chelsea have made no secret of their desire to sign a defender, with Ben White being the latest name linked with a move.

But with a deal seeming difficult to strike, it seems that a move for the experienced defender is being pursued as a short-term solution to their defensive woes.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

What a deal this could be.

Regardless of the fact that Thiago Silva is very much in the final knockings of his career, I still think that you'd be hard pushed to find a better defender.

The Brazilian is still more than capable of excelling at the highest level, and that is why a deal could make perfect sense.

Frankly, I'm not sure why Paris Saint-Germain haven't made a bigger effort to keep him.

But that could play right into Chelsea's hands.

While Lampard is determined to build a young side, there's no substitute for experience at the highest level.

Silva would be a top addition among the club's crop of young talent, and that is why this deal could prove to be a masterstroke if they can pull it off.
