Liverpool’s 2020/21 season is underway.

The Premier League champions have spent the week in Austria and played their first pre-season friendly against Stuttgart on Saturday.

Goals from Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita and Rhian Brewster sealed a 3-0 win.

While it was a comfortable victory, there was one unsavoury moment during the match.

After heavy rain, the surface at the Sportplatz Langau was pretty slick. And it contributed to a pretty nasty injury for Stuttgart’s Erick Thommy, with the help of Joe Gomez.

In the 29th-minute, the pair went shoulder to shoulder for the ball. Well, it was more a shoulder charge from Gomez into the back of Tommy.

It sent Thommy flying into the advertising boards near the touchline.

Ouch.

It resulted in a broken elbow. Thommy had an operation on Saturday night and will miss six to eight weeks.

KLOPP WAS 'VERY HAPPY'

After the match, Klopp admitted he was ‘very happy’ with Liverpool’s first friendly ahead of next week’s Community Shield.

"I'm very happy, very happy," Klopp said.

"It was a super intense session for us today because the weather, wow, it rained like crazy, the pitch was really difficult – you could see the water was still on the pitch.

"That makes football games always tricky. Good organised opponent obviously but we scored nice goals and for me most important was that we felt 45 minutes [of] football is different to a 90-minute session, because in sessions you make breaks, drinks break.

"Here is no break, so you just have to go through. That was the most important thing to do today and the boys did it, they felt the intensity of the game – very good.

"Tomorrow we do a little bit less, Monday two sessions, Tuesday is Salzburg, interesting. So, it's all good. I think Ki-Jana rolled the ankle a little bit but apart from that they all should be fine, which is obviously very important."
