Leeds eye club-record swoop for La Liga forward

Rodrigo Morenos vs Chelsea

Attacking players and nothing else. That seems to be the order of the day for Leeds at the moment.

Unless your name is Ben White, the Whites seemingly have no interest in signing any other centre-backs.

Consequently, Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa have turned to their attacking targets in a bid to strengthen the club ahead of Premier League life.

With a clash against Liverpool awaiting them on the opening weekend, they will have to be at their best. That surely means no Patrick Bamford.

The striker has just one goal in the top-flight of English football and it’s highly unlikely he won’t be good enough if Leeds want to beat the drop.

Bamford does work hard for the team, but his finishing ability leaves a lot to be desired.

Players like Ollie Watkins, Michy Batshuayi and Divock Origi have been linked with switches to Elland Road but there is one name that appears above all others.

Patrick Bamford

That’s a forward in Spain, Rodrigo Moreno to be more specific.

Leeds were initially touted with a switch for the Spaniard last week but now their pursuit of the Valencia striker is set to materialise. That’s if you believe The Daily Mail.

They claim that Leeds will have to pay around £30m for the Spain international, who actually has a release clause of £45m. That represents a boost for Leeds, but they will still have to break their transfer record in order to bring the 22-cap international to Yorkshire.

Fortunately, though, Rodrigo actually wants the move. It’s thought that he is open to a new challenge under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa – someone who has a reputation in Spain from his days with Athletic Bilbao.

GIVEMESPORT’S Matt Dawson says…

It’s absolutely fantastic news that a player of Rodrigo’s calibre is interested in a switch to Elland Road.

He is a player who has been performing at a high level on a consistent basis in La Liga for a while now, and he also has valuable Champions League experience.

The 29-year-old found the net eight times in 2019/20, scoring against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the process. More interestingly, however, is his passing ability.

Despite playing as an outright centre forward, Rodrigo actually assisted more goals, nine, than he scored last term.

That points to a player who gets the best out of those around him. His form in Spain has been so impressive that he’s also caught the attention of Barcelona.

Speaking at the turn of the year, former Barcelona head coach Quique Setien claimed he was an “extraordinary footballer.”

That might be pushing the boat out a bit but it shows just how well respected Rodrigo is in Spain. He is versatile, has experience of English football with Bolton and also works hard for the team.

This is exactly the type of player Leeds need in 2020/21.
