Tottenham's transfer window so far has been a strange one.
We always knew they were going to find it difficult to spend - the very fact they took a loan from the government is evidence of that.
But they're finding a way around things.
They acquired Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for a fee of £15m and then welcomed Joe Hart through the door on a free transfer.
Finding shrewd ways to operate in the market is what Daniel Levy is going to have to do. It would be highly unlikely that any considerable sum of money is spent, irrespective of whether Gareth Bale has been linked with a return.
That means that any moves for some of their defensive targets has to be met with some scepticism.
Milan Skriniar has been touted in recent weeks but there is another name now on Levy and Jose Mourinho's mind.
That's Brighton centre-back Ben White.
The young defender has caught the eye of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool, while Leeds have had three separate bids turned away to re-sign the player.
White starred on loan for the Whites in 2019/20 and it's unsurprising that he's now so highly sought-after.
Spurs have 'expressed' interest in the 22-year-old according to The Daily Mail but he looks set to cost any willing suitor around the £50m mark.
That's a far cry from the £25m bid that Leeds recently submitted for the central defender.
Brighton are desperate to hold on to him despite a plethora of options available to them in their defence.

This time last year, he'd only just made his Championship debut and a year on, he is still yet to step foot in the Premier League.
There is no doubting that White is an exceptional young defender and has a bright future in the game, but that is an obscene amount of money.
On loan at Leeds last season, he was praised as a "special player" who "seems to have everything" by Noel Whelan. At the same time, White completed over 84% of his passes, won 2.8 aerial duels per game and also completed 2.5 interceptions per match.
That is incredible consistency but it was in the second-tier.
Spurs would be gambling by signing him and at £50m, they simply cannot afford it.
The market is truly ridiculous if White is worth that much. After all, Arsenal are set to sign Brazilian defender Gabriel for just £27m. He is a player with top-flight experience going for nearly half of what White would cost Spurs.
They can surely find better value in the window, especially with their restricted finances.
This a move that Spurs will, unfortunately, have to swerve.
