The Covid-19 pandemic may have brought financial difficulty to football, but the game’s best players still aren’t short of a pretty penny. Some of the figures involved in football are, quite frankly, obscene. Weekly wages stretching into six-figures are no longer a surprise, and more of an expectancy at the top clubs.Arsenal’s recent decision to make 55 staff redundant days before signing winger Willian to a deal worth a reported £220,000-a-week sparked plenty of controversy, but it was proof that many players will be largely unaffected by the global virus. And so some of the figures in Forbes’ latest rankings of the top 100 earners in sport shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise. They are taken from the period between June 1, 2019 and June 1, 2020, so the full impact of the coronavirus isn’t felt.p1egigo9bg16l9qiuekfat3qf1b.jpgThe figures include prize money, salaries and bonuses earned during that time, although the full-year salary considers a players’ wages until the end of the 2019/20 season.Fourteen footballers were included in the top 100 athletes. It's no surprise to see Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at the top of the list.

They are the two most marketable players in the world, with Ronaldo being the most followed athlete on social media with more than 200 million Instagram followers.

His sponsorship deals, which include contracts with Nike, Unilever and Herbalife, earned Ronaldo £34m last year. His wages added an extra £45.4m to that.

It's also interesting to see how much Mesut Ozil and Gareth Bale get paid for not doing an awful lot at Arsenal and Real Madrid respectively. With all that money, Bale can go out and get himself a brand new set of golf clubs.
