Despite the adverse effects of the coronavirus pandemic on football, it still seems like we're in for a big transfer window.

Barcelona are looking to rebuild their squad after a disappointing season, while Frank Lampard is set to transform Chelsea into title contenders.

Those clubs are expected to be two of the biggest spenders but it won't be surprising to see the likes of Manchester City, PSG or Real Madrid signing some big names.

Chelsea have already secured deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, with Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz expected to join soon.

If all those deals go through, the Blues will have to spend around £223m (£36m for Ziyech, £47.5m for Werner, £50m for Chilwell and £90m for Havertz).

That's a pretty expensive summer. But how would Chelsea rank alongside the teams who have spent the most money in a single transfer window?

Let's check out the biggest ever spenders below.

Ronaldo's 2009 transfer is on the list

10. AC Milan | 2017 | £172m

The summer of 2017 was certainly one of high spending and AC Milan were right up there.

Leonardo Bonucci and Andre Silva were the blockbuster deals at £38m and £34m each and the San Siro club racked up a bill of £172m.

Somehow, they only managed a 6th place finish in Serie A and won no silverware.

9. Man United | 2014 | £174m

Louis van Gaal was backed to bring success to Man United after a shocking season under David Moyes.

The Dutchman brought in Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid for £68m, while Luke Shaw arrived from Southampton for £34m and Ander Herrera swapped Spain for England in a £32m deal.

Man United finished fourth in the Premier League the following season and like Milan, won no silverware.

8. Chelsea | 2017 | £183m

Roman Abramovich awarded Antonio Conte's title-winning season with a solid transfer war-chest.

The Blues bought Alvaro Morata for £59m, Tiemoue Bakayoko for £40m and even splashed £34m on Danny Drinkwater and £31m on Antonio Rudiger.

Only one of those players is a first-team regular these days.

Morata was a flop at Chelsea

7. Man City | 2015 | £185m

This might have been one of Man City's best-ever transfer windows - and it came before Pep Guardiola had even arrived.

Kevin De Bruyne arrived from Wolfsburg for £68m, while Raheem Sterling made a £57m switch from Liverpool.

Valencia's Nicolas Otamendi was another big addition to the squad at £40million, but incredibly, City only finished fourth in the Premier League that season.

Sterling and De Bruyne were huge signings

6. Barcelona | 2017 | £194m

Incredibly, Barca splashed £194 on just TWO players in 2017.

Philippe Coutinho joined from Liverpool for £105m, while Ousmane Dembele cost £89m. The second transfer, of course, came after Neymar departed for PSG.

Sadly, neither of Barcelona's big signings have lived up to expectations at Camp Nou... yet.

Dembele and Coutinho have struggled

5. Man City | 2017 | £222m

Guardiola failed to win a trophy at Man City during his first season and he spent BIG to make sure that didn't happen again.

Full-backs Benjamin Mendy (£52m) and Kyle Walker (£47m) moved to the Etihad, while Bernardo Silva linked up with Pep after a £45m move.

That summer, goalkeeper Ederson also arrived for £36m and Man City stormed to the Premier League title, collection 100 points.

Man City have spent big

4. Juventus | 2018 | £229m

What a summer this was for Juventus, headlined of course by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, who cost £105m.

He was complimented by Joao Cancelo who cost £36m. Douglas Costa then joined for the same fee and Leonardo Bonucci returned to the club for £32m.

As you can probably guess, Juve won Serie A that season. No change there.

3. Real Madrid | 2009 | £230m

Before Ronaldo joined Juventus, he transferred to Real Madrid in 2009 for £85m.

You might have forgotten that Kaka also joined for £60m and the front line was complete when Karim Benzema arrived for £32m from Lyon.

Liverpool's Xabi Alonso also signed for £31m that year. What a summer.

2. PSG | 2017 | £252m

A huge chunk of PSG's record-breaking summer spending came from Neymar alone. He completed a move from Barcelona for £198m.

The world's most expensive player was joined by Kylian Mbappe (on-loan), Dani Alves, Lassana Diarra and Yuri Berchiche.

It's been three years since that summer and the Champions League still alludes PSG.

Neymar's move in 2017 was expensive

1. Real Madrid | 2019 | £270m

Is it any surprise that Real Madrid top this list? Their greatest ever summer came just 12 months ago too.

Eden Hazard was the headliner at £103m and he was joined by Luka Jovic (£54m), Eder Militao (£45m), Ferland Mendy (£43m) and Rodrygo (£40m).

Los Blancos' spending was rewarded with the La Liga title this season.

There we have it, the 10 teams that have spent the most money in a single transfer window. As you can imagine, Man City and Real Madrid dominate.

But we wouldn't be surprised to see Chelsea near the top of the list when this summer's window closes.
