Arsenal's summer has been an absolute whirlwind.

The club won the FA Cup a few weeks ago but then made 55 members of staff redundant in a brutal cull by the club.

The signing of Willian on a free transfer followed and with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang still to pen new terms, Raul Sanllehi departed.

Long-serving scout Pat Rice has also left as the recruitment side of things at the Emirates Stadium was given a stern shake-up.

Renowned scout Francis Cagigao was also given the boot by Technical Director Edu.

However, after the negative press that surrounded the redundancies subsided, the Gunners got back to work in the transfer market.

Brazilian defender Gabriel has completed a medical and is due to arrive from Lille this week in a deal worth £25m.

Defensive acquisitions will be vitally important but so too will be improving the midfield. Thomas Partey remains a target while Houssem Aouar is on their radar

The most eye-catching of names touted has been Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara.

The midfielder has been linked with Liverpool in recent months but reports last weekend suggested Arsenal had made an enquiry to sign the recently crowned Champions League winner.

He is in the final year of his contract with Bayern and it's thought he may have now played his last game for the German champions.

Eyebrows were raised when that news emerged but it would appear that Arsenal are genuinely in contention to sign him.

French journalist Patrick Moreau took to Twitter on Monday to share the following information:

"Arteta had Thiago Alcantara on the phone during the day."

Thiago vs PSG Champions League final

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

This would be an absolutely sensational piece of business from Arsenal if they could pull it off.

Thiago clearly doesn't see his long-term future in Munich and if a club like Liverpool have been monitoring him so regularly, Arsenal would be fools to pass on the opportunity to sign him.

Thiago might be 29 but he has qualities that don't won't dwindle for a while yet. He is an excellent passer and ball retainer, completing over 90% of his passes this season while he's also strong in the tackle. He won 2.3 tackles per match in 2019/20.

Thiago vs Lyon

That's remarkable consistency from a footballer who is easily one of the best midfielders in the game. He has 28 major honours to his name and is in his prime.

Arsenal supporters may look at Aouar due to his young age and potential, but Thiago is in the world-class bracket. There is no need to pass on him because of his experience. After all, Luka Modric won the Ballon d'Or in the same position aged 33.
