Rangers FC and Steven Gerrard have enjoyed a bright start to the new season in Glasgow.

They are unbeaten in the league, sit six points clear of their fiercest rivals Celtic and have improved the side in the transfer window.

Alfredo Morelos may still leave, but let's focus on the positives here.

The Gers are sitting in a good place at the moment, especially after seeing Kemar Roofe score his first goal against Kilmarnock last week.

He scored their opening goal of the game as Ross Wilson was able to breathe a sigh of relief. At least he will for now.

The sooner he and Cedric Itten hit the ground running, the sooner they can move on from Morelos.

They are tough boots to fill, after all. He racked up 29 goals last term so it won't be easy by any stretch of the imagination.

If he departs then it frees up some extra room for manoeuvre in the transfer window.

Football Insider reported on Tuesday that their funds could be spent on Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy.

The 25-year-old, who cost the Magpies £10m back in 2017, has been somewhat of a flop in the Premier League, scoring just once in 41 appearances for Newcastle.

He has enjoyed loan spells with West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship but he could now find himself a permanent home elsewhere.

It's thought that Rangers have made an official approach for the winger but face competition from multiple clubs in England.

The Light Blues are hoping to strengthen their attacking ranks with Ryan Kent's future in doubt.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Let's start off by saying that Murphy isn't an exceptional player. That's evidenced by his shoddy record in the top-flight.

However, he is an adequate Championship footballer which leads us to believe he'd be pretty handy in the SPFL.

He scored nine goals last term and also created five assists for his teammates. He was in breathtaking form towards the back end of the campaign too.

In his final five matches, he racked up four goals and produced two assists from the right wing.

He is approaching his prime and it bodes well that he's beginning to find the net with more regularity.

Speaking about Murphy earlier this season, Sheffield Wednesday stopper Cameron Dawson only had positive words for him.

"He has an absolute hammer foot and I am delighted he showed everybody against Leeds how hard he can strike the ball because normally it is my fingers that take a pounding," he said.

That is enough to sending warning signs to the 'keepers in Scotland. He strikes the ball hard and knows where the net is. If Kent does depart, there's certainly worse replacements.
