Aston Villa supporters are enraged at the moment. Jack Grealish has been left out of the England squad in rather baffling circumstances.

Gareth Southgate's recent squad contains the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden.

However, there is no room for the English player who created the most chances in the top-flight last season. Crazy, right? 

The England boss has said it's nothing to do with the club he's playing for because of Tyrone Mings' selection. Does he have something against Grealish? Quite possibly. 

Anyway, it's important to move on from that now. The 24-year-old isn't in the squad and will need to crack on with his preparations for the new campaign. 

Villa are yet to conclude any business of note in the window but they're now starting to move in the right direction.

A £30m bid is planned for Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard while they clearly have plans to bolster their defensive ranks.

Brentford full-back Rico Henry has been linked with a move but now they're targeting improvements on the right-hand side too.

Last weekend, The Telegraph reported that Aston Villa were keen on signing Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

The Englishman has only been in Spain for a year but could move back to the Premier League.

And there was an update on Villa's pursuit on Tuesday courtesy of Spanish publication AS (via Sport Witness). 

They stated that it will be 'complicated' for Diego Simeone and co to consider negotiating an exit for Trippier.

That seems confusing given they already have Santiago Arias and Sime Vrsaljko on their books in the same position. 

Trippier has played in 107 Premier League matches and is currently valued at £25.2m, via Transfermarkt.

This would be a considerable coup from Villa if they could pull it off.

Only two years ago Trippier was starring at the 2018 World Cup, putting in some quite brilliant performances that led England to the semi-finals.

He scored a wonderful curling free-kick in that match against Croatia and came out of the tournament with his reputation severely enhanced.

A year later he was signing for one of the most organised sides in European football and playing for a reputable manager in Simeone.

He has been a regular in their Champions League squad and hasn't done an awful lot wrong. Perhaps that's why Atletico see it as a 'complicated' situation. 

Funnily enough, Trippier is a player who Southgate does rate highly. Speaking about the 29-year-old in June 2018, he said: 

"Kieran has outstanding quality and that kind of profile in that position is very important." 

Trippier is superb going forward and in 2019/20, created five assists for his teammates. He also managed two key passes per match from full-back in the Champions League. For context, Trent Alexander-Arnold registered 2.3 key passes per game last term.

The former Spurs man would certainly be an exciting addition at Villa Park.
